General Manager, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Mrs. Abimbola Animashaun-Odunayo, on Friday said that all distressed buildings in Lagos had been identified and earmarked for demolition.
Animashaun-Odunayo told the News Agency of Nigeria at the ongoing 2013 Lagos Housing Fair that LASBCA would strictly enforce the national and state building codes, laws and regulations.
"The recent building collapses in India and Bangladesh have shown that lives within a twinkle of an eye can be lost if nothing is done to enforce building laws.
"We will not wait for such magnitude of destruction of lives and property to happen in Lagos.
"We plan to reduce collapse of building in this state to zero," she said.
According to her, incidence of building collapse would stop in the country if Nigerians imbibed the culture of adhering to building laws, rules and regulations.
She said that developers and other building professionals had a great role to play in stopping the incidence of building collapse in the state.
"A good maintenance culture is the key to having buildings that stand for long.
"Citizens of developed societies which Lagos is trying to emulate willingly choose to obey laws; they are disciplined," she added.
