As part of the measures to equip residents with requisite skills, the Lagos State Government has commenced the training of 5, 000 people in different skills.

The training, which is under the auspices of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, is for a minimum of four weeks and is scheduled to hold at five centres namely: Ikorodu, Mosan-Okunola, Apapa, Coker-Aguda and Lagos Mainland Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas.

A statement by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Deputy Governor, Mr. Tunde Abatan, said his principal, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, urged the participants to seek the opportunity of the training to learn some skills.

Orelope-Adefulire noted that the training would assist the trainees to become self-employed and make worthy living for themselves.

She added that the short-term training was the ministry's response to the yearnings of the people who were unable to attend the regular programmes at the various skills acquisition centres for reasons beyond their control.

The deputy governor added that the short-term training programme was equally rich in content like regular classes as the ministry had deployed qualified instructors and materials to assist the beneficiaries in learning efficiently and effectively within a short period of time.

She assured other local governments and local council development areas not yet covered that they would enjoy similar opportunities soon.

In the same vein, the member representing Ikorodu Constituency 1 in the state House of Assembly, Mr. Sanai Agunbiade, lauded the state government for the opportunity provided to residents of the area to learn life-changing skills.

The lawmaker noted that the programme would serve as an impetus to change their lives and make them responsible citizens.

He assured the beneficiaries from his constituency that he would help to facilitate micro loans for those who intended to start small-scale businesses from the skills they would acquire through the programme.

Over 700 beneficiaries have so far registered and commenced training at two of the centres, while the remaining three centres are expected to begin training in June.
