I'll always stand up for my team – Shittu

Millwall captain, Danny Shittu, is having no remorse after getting a red card for confronting referee Gavin Ward in their 2-1 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers on Tuesday.

A win would have secured Millwall's Championship status but the game turned when Shittu was judged by Ward to have brought down Grant Hanley in the box.

Jordan Rhodes scored the spot-kick to leave Millwall needing a win from one of their remaining three games, against Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Derby to be safe.

Amidst criticism on his role ahead of Saturday game against Forest, Shittu, who got his second yellow card at the end of the game for challenging the referee, wrote on his Instagram and Facebook accounts, "I'm a passionate captain and stand up for my team. The word with the ref afterwards wasn't abuse but just firm words to let him know we were hard done by. My intentions weren't to get another card but just to speak my mind as the captain without being abusive. Good luck to my team mates and they will do us proud this weekend."

Small pockets of the Millwall crowd were calling for Kenny Jackett to be sacked as Millwall manager but Shittu has backed his boss as he blamed the defeat on the controversial penalty with the score at 1-1.

Shittu said the squad still had faith in Jackett to get the FA Cup semi-finalists out of trouble. "Of course (we're behind Jackett). He's our manager and he's got a job to do this season.

"We should have won that game; everyone knows we should have won. We lost it due to the decisions and we've just got to get on with things now."

Shittu then turned his anger on Hanley as he said: "We got cheated. The guy knew what he was doing and we were disappointed to lose like that because it's a game we shouldn't have lost."
