No fewer than 2,000 inmates of Ikoyi Prison benefitted from a free eye treatment organized by Segun Oyeleye Foundation under the aegis of Metro Eye Clinic.
A statement by the foundation on Wednesday said the exercise was to commemorate the 20 years anniversary of the death of Dr. Victor Oyeleye, the founder of Metro Eyes Nigeria Limited who believed in helping the needy.
The statement said. "The eye care outreach, which was carried out by highly skilled and specialised Optometrists cum ophthalmologists, took place on April 18, 2013 and it involved full eye care services ranging from full screening, consultation to treatments, distribution of recommended glasses (having duly examined the prescriptions of each inmate), drugs and contact lenses, counseling and eye surgery when the need arose.
"The aim of the event was to properly propagate and help prevent blindness when they are incarcerated."
The statement, however, advised Nigerians that prompt examination of the eyes by a licensed eye care provider once in every two years would go a long way in reducing the incidence of blindness and eye related problems.
