No fewer than 652 persons died in road crashes in Lagos State in six months, statistics from the Federal Road Safety Corps have indicated.
The period, according to the Lagos Sector Command, FRSC, covered November 2012 and April 2013.
The FRSC said during the period, a total of 4,145 road crashes occurred, out of which 586 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The corps said of the 652 persons that died, 33 persons died instantly, while 619 died from injuries arising from the crashes.
It said the total number of people involved in the crashes were 1,589, while total number of vehicles involved in crashes were 370.
It said the number of motorcycles involved in crashes were 25, while that of cars were 127.
As for buses, 103 were involved, while Pick-Up vans were 14, according to the organisation.
The FRSC added that Jeeps, trucks, tankers, trailers and tricycles were 91, with jeeps leading the pack with 39 incidents.
It said while the number of commercial vehicles involved in road crashes was 181, the private vehicles accounted for 178.
According to the FRSC, eight government vehicles were involved in road accidents, while diplomatic vehicles recorded no crashes during the months under review.
In November, 2012, the organisation said loss of control (LOC), tyre burst (TBT) and dangerous driving (DGD) were the main causes of crashes.
In December of the same year, speed limit violation (SPV), DGD and LOC were the major causes of road accidents in the state.
In January 2013, the corps indicated that DGD and LOC constituted the major reasons for crashes, while in the month after, DGD, SPV and TBT were the predominant causes.
It said SPV, LOC and TBT were the main causes of crashes in March, while April crashes were due mainly to SPV, OGD and TBT.
Giving a holistic outlook of the entire crashes, the FRSC said SPV, DGD, LOC and TBT were the main causes of road crashes in the state during the year under review.
