Beyond emergency
May 20th 2013, 23:54

President Goodluck Jonathan talked tough during his national broadcast declaring a state of emergency in three northern states. However, the President must go beyond that: the Federal Government must beef up security in all other states of the federation to avoid the eruption of the insurgents' activities in those states. Declaring an emergency rule  is like drawing a battle line and the government must be ready to suppress them. What happens to their loyalists and supporters and financiers backbone who still dine and wine with the government? The government should apply the rule of law and charge them to the appropriate courts of law. It should not hesitate to seek help and advice from the international community. Besides, there is the need not to associate national security with politics. The government should create jobs for the youths as a lot of them are not doing anything. Let there be an enabling environment for the youths to thrive. We need a change now for a better nation.

The PUNCH's editorial on Thursday, May 16, was balanced but for the recommendation that the amnesty committee be dissolved. The Turaki Committee on Amnesty is very relevant. No nation can be at war with its citizens. What happens if Boko Haram members repent? There must be a mechanism to attend to those who repent from the insurgency. I only hope you will accommodate alternative views.
