Warranties'll curb influx of substandard building materials –Karamat

An indigenous building materials, fittings and accessory company, Karamat Limited, has described the influx of substandard building products in Nigeria as worrisome.

The Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mrs Carol Urunmatsoma, said this during an interview with our correspondent in Lagos on Thursday.

She warned that though Nigeria lacked capacity to meet local demand for building accessories, the influx of substandard products, especially security doors, should be curbed for the general good of the society.

To check the trend, she explained that it was imperative for house fitting manufacturers and companies to give warranties to customers while acquiring necessary certifications for their products as a way of building customer confidence.

"By the time people have access to good quality products; they will do away with substandard products. Warranty and certifications on products are necessary," she said.

Urunmatsoma, who recalled that  Karamat had entered into partnership with two German firms, ALNO AG and NOLTE, to boost its building materials and products portfolio in Nigeria, said the partnership would ensure expertise and knowledge transfer for innovative products offering.

She explained that the partnership was aimed at ensuring that construction firms, estate developers, builders, interior decorators, architects and furniture business outfits enjoyed access to the latest, high quality, innovative, modern products in kitchen cabinets and wardrobes.

The Karamat boss said the German firms would help in 'designing and planning of our own indigenous drawings, training on installations and assembling of the fittings, and transfer of technology.'

The partnership, she added, would also boost the availability of high quality products in Nigeria as well as widen the scope of Nigerian workers in areas such as granite tops training and development.

Urunmatsoma further said the partnership would also increase the growth of the industry in procurement of local raw materials while generating employments for Nigerians who are involved in design and installation of the products.

Asked whether the partnership involved the establishment of a manufacturing plant in Nigeria, she said, "Yes, there are plans to train Nigerians in designing home fittings and also we have plans to open modern factories soon in Nigeria."

She, however, lamented that the building material industry had yet to enjoy adequate government support.
