Rio 2014 on Davies' mind

Walk race gold medallist, Joy Davies, is eager to shine at a major international event after picking gold at National Sports Festival earlier in the week.

Davies made her third and last appearance at the games after first competing at the 2009 edition in Kaduna, where she won silver, and the 2011 edition in Port Harcourt, where she won bronze.

"I want to go international now. I can't feature in the National Sports Festival again so I have to seek bigger challenges at the world level and hope to be at the 2014 Olympics in Rio," the Team Rivers athlete said.

Davies personal best is 1:46: 22 which she set at the last Mobil Athletics Championship, but on Tuesday, she won the gold with 1:59:39.96 in the women's 20km event.

Davies shot to the finish line, leaving Delta State's Bolanle Kazeem (2:08:04.40) and Ogechi Obi of Imo State (2:09:43) to pick the silver and bronze medals respectively.

Davies was excluded from the team that represented Nigeria at the 2011 All-Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique despite her impressive performance at the Mobil championships in Calabar, Cross River State. She did not understand why the Athletic Federation of Nigeria excluded her from the team but she is determined to impress the next time.

She said, "Winning gold at the sports festival cannot be compared to winning medals at the All-Africa Games. It's the ambition of many athletes to represent their countries. I want to represent Nigeria and win gold at the world championships and the Olympics.

"Perhaps if I had featured in the last All-Africa Games in Maputo I could have won something because the silver medallist finished in one hour 46 minutes, same time I finished in Calabar before the games."
