A non-governmental organisation, Network on Police Reform in Nigeria, on Wednesday, protested against the appointment of former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, as Chairman for the Police Service Commission.
Okiro was last week nominated by President Goodluck Jonathan as the new chairman of the PSC after Parry Osayande quit the position in April. The Senate has yet to confirm the appointment.
In a statement by NOPRIN Programme and Advocacy Coordinator, Okechukwu Nwanguma, the group queried the appointment, saying Okiro had some uncleared questions against him.
The statement said, "There are pending serious allegations Okiro needs to clear before being considered for consideration for high public office.
"It was widely reported in the media that as acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, his immediate predecessor, Sunday Ehindero, and several other serving police officers, had some questions to answer.
NOPRIN therefore urged the Senate to reject Okiro's nomination, adding that acting otherwise, would be "voting to compromise the work of the PSC irretrievably".
It said, "The distinguished members of the Senate consent to this nomination, they would be voting to compromise the work of the PSC irretrievably."
