Activities at the Federal Ministry of Health, Abuja, was on Thursday paralysed as protesting workers, under the aegis of Joint Health Sector Unions, demanded the sacking of the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu.

JOHESU, comprising nurses and midwives,  pharmacists, technologists, members of staff of health-allied institutions and research establishments – accused Chukwu of turning the ministry into a "ministry of doctors."

Chairman of JOHESU, Dr. Ayuba Waba said, "The Minister of Health has failed in realising the mandate given to him when he was appointed as minister.

The demand for the sacking of the minister is coming after JOHESU members had consistenly complained of the ministry's bias for medical doctors.

The union members also pointed to the deplorable conditions in the health sector and the National Health Bill, as among the reasons why they are seeking the removal of the minister.

They also demanded that the report of a presidential committee on the harmonisation of the health sector be "implemented immediately".

The protesters also took their grievances over the National Health Bill to the National Assembly.

House committee Chairman on Health, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu, who addressed the protesters, said the call for the sacking of the minister was a "technical one".

He, however, assured that all their complaints  would be considered.

But when contacted, the Special Assistant to the Minister (Media and Communication), Mr. Dan Nwomeh, described the workers's action as unwarranted.
