NIPOST targets 24-hour mail delivery for Lagos
Dec 8th 2012, 23:00

The Nigeria Postal Service has set a 24-hour mail delivery for 80 per cent of mails posted within the Lagos zone of the postal organisation.

The Postmaster General of the Federation, Mr. Ibrahim Baba, said this at a recent ceremony to reward members of staff of the organisation that excelled in 2011.

Baba also said, despite the threats, which new information and communications technology had posed to the existence of postal service, the new technologies had also created new opportunities that could be exploited by the postal service.

He said faster delivery of mail was one of the things that the postal service must do to remain in business as it was key to customers' satisfaction.

Baba said, "Management is committed to the delivery of high quality of services to our customers. To demonstrate this commitment, we have set new standards in our mail delivery targets.

"In Lagos zone, for instance, 80 per cent of all items posted must be delivered within 24 hours, 90 per cent within 48 hours and 100 per cent within 72 hours."

He also said, "In all other zones, 50 per cent of all items must be delivered within 24 hours, 65 per cent within 48 hours and 90 per cent within 72 hours. In ensuring the achievement of these targets and the provision of high quality services, management has designed a set of key performance indicators for assessing the performance of managers."

He said the KPIs would guide the managers and other workers to focus on all areas of service delivery that would ensure the provision of world class postal services.

The NIPOST boss said instead of lamenting the devastating effects of new communications technologies on the bottom line of the postal organisation, the important thing to do was to harness the possibilities of the new technologies to enhance the efficiency of the postal system.

He added that the dependence of the NIPOST on government funding had over the years made it numb to the emerging enormous economic possibilities.

The PMG said wide reach and spread of the postal organisation was an asset waiting to be explored to sustain the operations of the system.

Baba said, "Jobs and functions of the post office have drastically changed over the years due to transformation and developments in information and communication sector.

"Cheaper and faster means of communication are evolving thereby threatening the traditional duties of the post. There has been a great shift in the demand for postal products by the customers. The volume of physical mail is declining. The demand for financial and electronic services is increasing. The post, globally, are therefore turning to electronic and financial services as their new sources of revenue.

"Advancement in communication technology has also opened enormous opportunities for the post. Indeed, ICT has brought about tremendous increases in global commerce with a corresponding increase in the demand for logistics services, which is the main business of the post."

The NIPOST boss added that there was an urgent need for the organisation to abandon old ways of doing things and embrace international best practices that would ensure the satisfaction of its customers whose tastes were continuously changing.

A total of 17 staff members received awards at the ceremony including Mrs. Adelabu Adetutu as the most outstanding worker; Mr. Ademola Falahun, first runner up and Mr. Gboyega Oniye, most outstanding manager of the year.
