CHIEF Imam of Dutse, Dr. Abubakar Sani, has reiterated the need for young Muslim women to study obstetrics and gynaecology, a branch of medicine that deals on the health of women, to preserve the dignity of motherhood.

Jigawa State, which currently battles with inadequate manpower in the health sector, is in dare need of specialist doctors in various fields of medicine, especially women in gynaecology due to the culture and religious sensibilities of the people.

Sani, who spoke at a reception organised in honor of Dr. Yamuna Aminu Kani for becoming a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons and the first female obstetrician and gynaecologist from Jigawa State, said it was mandatory for the society to encourage and sponsor women to seek for further studies in medicine.

He indicated that in Islamic faith the search for knowledge is compulsory for every person.

Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, who spoke through his secretary, Alhaji Lawan Abdu Babura, reiterated his administration's commitment to free education for the girl child from primary to university level.

He congratulated the celebrant on behalf of the state for making the state proud.

Chief medical director of the Rasheed Shekoni Specialist Hospital pointed out that out of the three consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists from Jigawa State, two of them currently work outside the state.

"The celebrant is the only female that works full time in the State," he said.

He commended her for her hard work and commitment to duty.

Among several dignitaries at the occasion included Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu and Alhaji Mustapher Habib(Zanan Dutse).
