Zonal Commanding Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, RS2, Lagos and Ogun states, Mr. Ademola Lawal, says 1,341 accidents occurred in the two states between January and November 2012.

The FRSC officer said during an awareness campaign organised by the Surulere Unit of the corps in Lagos on Friday that out of that number, 443 deaths were recorded.

Lawal, who was represented by Mr. Awoloye Ogungbemide, said the casualties could have been avoided if motorists took some steps, which the corps had been advocating.

He said, “You as commercial bus drivers need to be responsible because you hold the key to people's safety. The role you play on the road makes it important for you to be mindful of the actions you take while driving.”

He said the FRSC lacked some essential equipment which could make the job of its officials easy, adding that officials still use axes to extricate victims from mangled vehicles at accident sites.

According to him, the FRSC will ensure safety of lives on the road during the Yuletide season by posting officials to various bad spots on Lagos roads to guide motorists.

Lawal explained that the FRSC recently established free periodic health checks, 'Motorised Patrol Speed Control', and 'Passenger Road Watch' to ensure safety and compliance with safety regulations.
