THE Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, has called for a united Nigeria, stressing that no part of the country could survive alone.
Speaking at the 1st National Transformation Conference organised by the Institute for National Transformation yesterday in Abuja, Anyim called for new approach to re-discovering intrinsic values, which has been diluted with political ambitions of individuals who sometimes seek relevance in primordial sentiments of regionalism, ethnicity and other forms of bigotry.
Anyim observed that Nigeria, at pre-independence, had selfless hardworking and nationalistic politicians, whose concerns were the welfare of Nigerians in a free environment.
Anyim said: "The journey into nationhood, which started in 1914 with the historical amalgamation, will hit centenary in the next two years. Yet, the Nigerian national question is still re-occurring. The diversity, which makes Nigeria unique, has given rise to a nation that is able to survive myriads of challenges and remain bound as one entity."
The senator noted that the nation has offered enough excuses for the past failures, adding that Vision 20:2020 embarked by the present administration does not have options than to succeed.
Director -General of the institute, Prof. Vincent Anigbogu, said that without the virtues of unity and peace, the nation's quest for greatness would remain a mirage.
Anigbogu, who noted that the country is currently faced with many challenges, added that "we must agree to lay down arms, come together as a people and vigorously pursue national goals as Africa is looking up to Nigeria to lead the way in forging a truly great continent."
