Kenya striker Francis Kahata, who scored Harambee Star's opening goal against Nigeria in the World Cup qualifier, revealed to newsmen on Tuesday in Nairobi that he could have scored more goals in the match.
Kahata's impressive free kick stunned Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama in the 36th minute, giving the visitors an unexpected lead against the African champions.
The Thika United player, who got cash rewards and a hero's welcome back at home, described the free kick as nothing special.
"I am used to scoring such kind of goals from the same angle so when we won a free kick and I was allowed to take it, I was perfectly confident it was going to go in," The Standard quoted the player as saying.
"I have done it so many times in the local league until I got used to it. For me, there was nothing special about it."
Kahata said it was unfortunate he did not score a second goal after he found himself unmarked in the Nigerian defence in the 78th minute.
"I still don't understand why the ball did not go into the net. I was also expecting to score," he said.
The player said he was encouraged by his performance, considering that it was his first match for the team, adding that the 1-1 draw would build confidence in the team.
Meanwhile, Kenya coach Adel Amrouche insisted the team were still in the process of rebuilding as he promised a better result in the return leg fixture.
Amrouche also downplayed the decision to send him off with a few minutes before the end of the match insisting it was 'better than having one of his players sent off'.
"For me the most important thing is building a team for the future. The result against Nigeria was great but we cannot read too much into it," he said.
He said it is too early to say whether the team can qualify for the World Cup, pointing out that a lot of work still needs to be done.
"We must give it time. We cannot expect to reap after just a few months of preparations," said the coach.
