Some residents of Ekiti States have hailed the return of police checkpoints along the Ado-Ekiti/Iyin Ekiti Road and the increased police patrol across the state.

They called for the deployment of policemen in Ado-Ekiti/Ijan-Ekiti Road as well as the Ikere-Ekiti/Ise Ekiti Road.

Those who spoke with our correspondent in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday said the presence on armed policemen on the Ado Ekiti/Iyin-Ekiyi Road had prevented armed bandits from operating at the spots notorious for armed robbery attacks.

They, however, urged the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Sotonye  Wakama,  to monitor the activities of his men on duty along this road in order to prevent them from extorting money from those they were supposed to protect.

Some residents had earlier accused some of the policemen deployed in the road of extorting money from motorists but majority believed that the police presence on the road  was a relief from activities of armed bandits.

The Chairman of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties in the state, Mr. Tunji Ogunlola, said the presence of policemen on the Ado Ekiti/Iyin-Ekiti Road had brought relief to commuters and motorists plying the road.

A civil servant, who identified himself as Mr. Akin Olofin, said he worked in Ado Ekiti and lived in Iyin Ekiti, stated that he had escaped attacks twice on the road.

He said the presence of security men on the road had bolstered his courage.

The CNPP chairman said, "The presence of policemen on this road is highly commendable. It is a relief to people who had been traveling on the road in fear.

"We raised this issue when the commissioner of police had a meeting with all political parties.

"We want the CP  to also deploy his men in Ado Ekiti/Ijan Road and also to Ikere Ekiti/Ise Ekiti Road. These two roads are notorious for armed robbery attacks and I believe that police presence would reduce crime on these roads."

Ogunlola recalled a robbery attack on Ijan-Ekiti Road where some suspected herdsmen terrorising the road  users  shot dead a pregnant woman.
