Lagos State Government has said the goal of Governor Babatunde Fashola-led administration is to attain a zero tolerance for waste.
Commissioner for the Environment, Tunji Bello, said this during the presentation of 100 Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Waste Bins from Ford Conversation and Environmental Grants.
A statement from the ministry said the gesture was Ford's way of showing support for the state's effort in attaining a cleaner and sustainable environment.
Bello, who was represented by the acting Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Mrs. Adebola Afun, said, "The ultimate target of the government is to attain a zero tolerance waste management as well as a sustainable environment conducive for economic activities.
"Government is unrelenting in ensuring that the citizens of the state attain a sustainable and healthy environment thus initiated Lagos Greenery Programme."
The commissioner urged other corporate and private organisations to collaborate with the government to educate the residents of the state on the benefits of a cleaner environment and the need for attitudinal change on indiscriminate waste disposal.
The spokesperson for Ford Foundation, Mrs. Laura Oloyede, explained that the Reduce-Reuse-Recycle campaign was aimed at educating the public on the importance of proper waste disposal and how to properly care for the environment.
She said, "As part of its global commitment to environmental stewardship and the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the countries where it operates, Ford Motor Company is today launching its Conversation and Environmental Grants programme in Nigeria.
"The grants programme will further foster improved relationships with governmental ministries, non-governmental organisations among others."
