Ogun rues children's death through diabetes

Ogun State Ministry of Health on Monday raised the alarm that health care professionals were neglecting diabetes in children.

The ministry argued that children had been dying from diabetes without actually manifesting the symptoms of the killer disease presented by the adult and aged sufferers.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Tunde Olowonyo, said at a workshop on diabetes organised in Abeokuta by the Ogun State Government and SANOFI, an international pharmaceutical company, that diabetes, which many believe is an ailment that afflicts only adults and the aged, had also been found in some children.

Olowonyo therefore advised health professionals that in tackling the prevalence of the killer disease, children should not be left out in their research and investigations.

He said, "Earlier this morning, we signed an MOU with SANOFI. That is to show you how serious we are. One of the problems of the aged is chronic diseases such as diabetes. Before now we have been partnering other NGOs on how to prevent diabetes. About a month ago we had a walk against diabetes. If well managed, one can live for long. But many people tend to forget that children too can have diabetes.

"We have children dying from diabetes without presenting the usual symptoms. In children, diabetes comes with coma. Some children are also born with it. If you have a child that is always having boils, do a urine test, he may be having diabetes."

Declaring the workshop open, the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, said practical efforts must be made by all stakeholders to identify and control non-communicable diseases such as diabetes.

The General Manager, Sanofi, North-East Africa, Dr. Paulo Agbetonou, said the company was partnering with the state Ministry of Health on interventions against both communicable and non-communicable diseases with a special focus on diabetes, hypertension and malaria.
