Business News (Transportation) –In its determination to reduce accidents and ensure safety of road users, the Lagos State Government has commenced the standardization of all driving schools in the State.
Commissioner for Transportation, Comrade Kayode Opeifa, who disclosed this during a meeting with Nigeria Driving School Proprietor Association, recently stated that the commencement of the standardization is very important since driving schools play prominent role in determining the quality of drivers.
He warned that the era where mushroom driving schools, incompetent instructors or drivers who do not know the rudiment of driving are recommended by driving schools for driver’s licence is gone.
With the standardization, a uniform curriculum would be introduced by the State Government for the Driving Schools in order to ensure that all intending drivers acquire the necessary training.
He urged the association to ensure that they do their best to upgrade their schools adding that the State Government would soon embark on the inspection of driving schools, after which a compendium on driving schools would be published. This he said wpould guide intending drivers in knowing the government approved driving schools.
He pledged the state government’s support to Driving Schools especially in the area of instructional materials as well as ensuring that professional drivers, who failed the Lagos State Drivers’ Institute re-certification training, undergo a compulsory training in the standardized Driving Schools.
The Commissioner urged the association to cooperate with the State Government in sanitizing and standardising driving schools in the state adding that this effort by the State Government is to uplift the image of driving schools as well as ensure that only competent and qualified drivers are allowed to handle the steering.
He implored them to ensure that all their instructors are well trained and are exposed to modern techniques in driving adding that vehicles used in the training of intending drivers should be roadworthy.-Vanguard
