Dec 1st 2012, 00:00

Boko-Hram-1GUNMEN on Friday afternoon attacked a post of the Nigerian Immigration Service in Damasak, Borno State, killing two officers.

Also attacked was a bakery where three workers were shot dead.

Panicky residents took to their heels while some were reported to have jumped into the River Yobe.

Soldiers arrived the scene at 5pm.

Damasak, 187 kilometres north of Maiduguri, the state capital, is the council headquarters of Mobbar Local Government Area and is located along the border with Niger Republic.

An eyewitness, Mohammed Isa, said the men arrived on motorcycles and began shooting, chanting, "God is great!"

In a telephone chat, Isa told The Guardian that the gunmen might have been the ones that attacked and torched the Rann Police station.

This Wednesday incident claimed the lives of five policemen.

Asked if there were other casualties in Friday's attacks, Isa said: "I cannot say whether other security personnel and residents were killed. But I am certain that three people were shot dead at the bakery. A neighbour said about two immigration officers were also shot by the assailants. I cannot say if the men were armed bandits or Boko Haram members. We have never experienced this kind of attacks before."

Confirming the killings yesterday in Maiduguri, the Borno State Police spokesman, Gideon Jibrin, said report of an attack on an immigration post and a bakery in Damasak town was received.

He said three civilians and a security personnel are believed to have died.

He described the gunmen as the set hoodlums that launched the Rann Police station attack.

The five policemen who were killed in the incident had tried to protect the station from been blown up with improvised explosives.
