TO ensure better roads in the country, the Federal Government has begun repair of failed portions of the nation's highways.
Also, a former Federal Commissioner for Works, Alhaji Femi Okunnu (SAN), has called on the Federal Government to tackle the issue of bad roads in the country.
Minister of Works, Mike Onolememen, while inspecting the pace of work done Monday on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, said that similar to the Federal Government intervention on the expressway, it had also started repair works on the Enugu-Port Harcourt, Ilorin-Jeba-Mokua and Markudi-Lafia to Abuja roads.
He added that rehabilitation of the Lagos-Ibadan road would take eight weeks to complete.
Okunnu, who described the current state of roads within the country 'as death traps' killing and maiming Nigerians, noted that previous administrations after former president Shehu Shagari "were oblivious of the economic and social importance of good road network to the growth and development of a nation."
He said: "I am yet to see any seriousness on the part of the present administration to improve on the state of our roads in the country."
