Fears over Babalakin's health
Dec 10th 2012, 23:51

There were fears on Monday over the health of the Chairman of Bi-Courtney Limited, Dr. Wale Babalakin, with the increased presence of riot policemen at a ward of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, where the businessman is currently on admission.

It was learnt that the heavy presence of the security operatives followed an alleged directive from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, to arrest him.

Although authorities at LUTH, Idi-Araba, Lagos, foiled an earlier attempt on Sunday, some of the operatives said they had received orders to forcibly take Babalakin from the hospital to enable him to stand trial at the Ikeja High Court, on Wednesday.

The EFCC had filed a 27 counts at the court in connection with an alleged money laundering offence against Babalakin and others.

But a Federal High Court has restrained the anti-graft agency from going ahead with his arraignment and trial.

The drama had started last Tuesday when over 20 policemen and EFCC operatives stormed the hospital allegedly  to abduct the ailing businessman, but were prevented by the management.

Bi-Courtney had described the move as a new trend in judicial administration in Nigeria. It decried "the desperation by EFCC to violate provisions of the law and constitution in order to circumvent justice, and a violation of the basic human rights of the citizen".

Earlier on Sunday, an operative of the agency reportedly sneaked into Babalakin's room, but was accosted by some vigilant members of staff of the hospital.

It was learnt that the unidentified operative, who pretended to be a visitor to gain access to the room, later identified himself as an official of EFCC after Babalakin had raised the alarm that attracted the attention of the medical personnel on duty.
