Fayemi presents N93.6bn 2013 budget

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Thursday presented a budget proposal of N93.6bn for 2013 to the State House of Assembly.

The governor proposed to spend N47.2bn, which represents 50.4 per cent of the total budget, on capital projects while N46.4bn representing 49.6 per cent of the total budget estimate, is expected to be spent on recurrent expenditure.

Fayemi, in the budget which is christened “Budget of Empowerment and Consolidation” said that all the ongoing projects would be given priority while health and education would also be the focus of the appropriation bill.

The governor said infrastructure would gulp 21.2 per cent of the total budget, education 17.2 per cent and health, 10.7 per cent. Agriculture sector is to get three per cent, industry 3.3 per cent; tourism gets 1.7 per cent, while women empowerment, gender and sports will get 2.3 per cent.

Fayemi stated that N9.9bn would be expended on road projects even as he said that three Divisional Headquarters in the state: Ikere, Ikole and Ijero would have their township roads reconstructed as well as get street lights, as part of the government's urban renewal plan.

The budget will also focus on water projects with N2.4bn budgeted for the rehabilitation of all major dams, while N2.163bn is budgeted for the rehabilitation of all the General Hospitals and special Comprehensive Health Centres and furnishing of same.

The budget is to be sourced from the federal allocation value added tax, internally generated revenue, external grants, MDG conditional grants, bond, special grants and ecological fund among others.

While stating that the budget was targeted at putting poverty to flight at the grass roots and empower rural dwellers, Fayemi disclosed that a new ministry would soon be put in place to address issues cutting across poverty reduction and rural development.

Fayemi said that the 2012 budget achieved its objective to a very large extent while urging the lawmakers to give the appropriation bill a speedy passage.

The governor stated that his administration inherited a debt of N40bn including some abandoned road projects when he assumed office on October 16,2010.
