Pupils from two East African countries have emerged the winners of the 2012 DSTV/Eutelsat Star Awards on satellite technology contest for secondary school pupils on the continent.

This was contained in a statement issued by the organisers after the winners were announced at an event at Dar es-Salam, Tanzania, on Thursday.

Anthony Oyom Peter from Uganda won the essay category of the contest, while Eva Chemwgorem from Kenya was adjudged the best in the poster category.

Anthony's essay, entitled, 'A watchful eye from above the heavens,' was adjudged the best for its creativity.

This is the second year a Ugandan pupil would be taking first place in the DStv/Eutelsat Star Awards, following closely last year's winner, Mary Musimire.

Tanzania's Deputy Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Mr. January Makamba, while speaking at the occasion encouraged the sponsors to provide sustainable solutions to some of Africa's social challenges

Only 10 out of the over 1,100 entries from pupils across Africa were reviewed by the judges. They described the standard of the works as high and encouraging.

Chief Executive Officer, MultiChoice Africa, Nico Meyer, said considering the scope of Africa's challenges today, it was impossible for one organisation to effect change without partnering with others.

Also, the CEO of Eutelsat Communications, Michel de Rosen, expressed happiness at the ingenuity of pupils who participated in the competition.
