The second edition of the Four Nation Beach Soccer Invitational Tournament, otherwise known as Copa Lagos, will take place in Lagos between December 14 and.16, 2012.
The first edition was an unqualified success as football fans in their thousands thronged the Eko Atlantic, off Bar Beach in Victoria Island to watch the very best of beach soccer.
Teams from Brazil, the inventors of the game, England, South Africa and our own Sand Eagles took part in what turned out to be three days of an exhilarating combination of beach soccer, music and high fashion that kept all in attendance suitably entertained.
The Sand Eagles provided the icing on the cake with a brilliant 9-4 win over four-time world champions, Brazil, in the final to lift the inaugural Copa Lagos.
The national beach soccer teams of Argentina, Portugal and Lebanon are coming for this year's tournament to try and wrest the title from the Sand Eagles and thrill the fans with their luxuriant skills.
The Sand Eagles coach, Audu Adamu, has told Nigerians that the boys are ready to defend their title and are not afraid of any country. The squad is currently in camp in Badagry after returning from the United Arab Emirates. The Sand Eagles participated in the 8 nation Samsung Intercontinental Beach Soccer Tournament for the best beach soccer nations in the world. Nigeria has made massive strides in the sport considering we first participated in the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in 2006.
The Sand Eagles put up a creditable performance in Dubai, losing 3-6 to Brazil in their first game, beating Switzerland and Japan to qualify for the semis where they lost to world champions .Russia and host UAE in the third place play off.
I had a lot of fun at the last Copa Lagos, I'm sure this year's edition will be even better.
