The Medical Guild in Lagos State on Monday appealed to the state government to address the shortage of doctors in public hospitals.

Chairman of the Guild, Dr. Olumuyinwa Odusote, made the appeal at a news conference in Lagos.

Odusote said that this was to prevent further deterioration of the health care service in the public hospitals and in particular the Lagos State Teaching Hospital.

“This has been brought to the attention of the authorities and we hope the resolution will be quicker than expected so that our people will not suffer.

“People wait for more than five months for appointments to see a doctor or get treatment in the hospital,” he said.

Odusote also said that the issues surrounding the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure were still outstanding.

According to him, the issues include teaching allowance to doctors on GL 10 and 12 that have yet to be paid; consultants still being employed on Grade Level 15 step 1 as against Grade Level 15 step 4.

“We have met the state government once with the Nigerian Medical Association, Lagos Chapter to discuss these issues and other fallout of the crises.

“Nothing has been achieved and we have chosen and continued to apply ourselves to duty, despite worsening conditions at the hospitals,” he said.
