President Goodluck Jonathan is to attend the summit of Heads of State and Government of the Group of Eight Developing Nations (D-8) in Islamabad, Pakistan.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said the President would depart Abuja on Tuesday night for the meeting which opens on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Jonathan will be accompanied on the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Olugbenga Ashiru, the Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
It stated that besides participating in the summit, Jonathan would also hold bilateral meetings in Islamabad with the presidents of Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey, Iran and Egypt.
“The president will also meet with Nigerians living in Pakistan before returning to Abuja on Friday,” he added.
The D-8, which was established in 1997 to foster development cooperation among member countries, has Pakistan, Malaysia, Turkey and Iran as members.
Others are Nigeria, Bangladesh, Egypt and Indonesia.
The objectives of the organisation include promoting trade and economic cooperation among its members, improving member states' position in the global economy, diversifying and creating new opportunities for them in international trade relations.
Others are enhancing the member states' participation in decision-making at the global level and improving the standards of living of people living in the eight member-countries.
