Bishop criticises fetish sacrifices in Ekiti

The Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, on Monday decried the upsurge in fetish sacrifices by unknown persons in some parts of the state.

He said at a forum by the state council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Ado Ekiti that the deed was returning the people of the state to the dark ages.

He stressed that citizens should shun self-help in the attempt to achieve worldly materials and positions, saying, “sacrifices at numerous junctions in roads in the state baffles me.”

The cleric, who challenged the people to return to God, condemned those behind the sacrifices, saying their activities were defacing the streets of Ekiti.

According to him, it is primitive and does not portray us as civilised people who have total belief in God.

“I saw a whole ram at a junction in Usi-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of the state, garnished with salt and palm oil.

“Apart from being unsightly and unhealthy, I see it as a waste of resources because I believe there must be people in that community who had not eaten meat for some time,” he said.

He decried the sacrifices made during the teachers' botched test and local government workers protests in the state.

Ajakaye said it was “embarrassing and we can make our points without being primitive and the council workers even went as far as tying the gates to their councils with palm fronds.

“There must be Christians and Muslims among the workers, who go to churches and mosques. It needs to be totally condemned because we should have gone beyond that.

“We should live in the light and not in the dark past. We all have problems but sacrifices are not the solution.”
