BRIEFS

THE Chief Whip of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Mr. Golu Timothy, has cleared air on allegations from certain quarters that the Plateau State House of Assembly is a rubber-stamp for the state's executive.

Timothy, who is a member representing Kanke state constituency in the House, spoke at the weekend in Jos during a chat with journalists.

He said: "The fact that we are not fighting with the executive does not mean that we have been bought over or that we have become a rubber-stamp.

"I want to tell you categorically that the House of Assembly is not a rubber-stamp. It is not. There are many approaches.

"You know what is happening in the state; you know the security situation. You know that, as it is now, the state government is funding security operations in the state. This is dwindling economic fortunes. There are so many things we are supposed to make cases for but we are not because of that understanding."

"If we are not fighting, it should be assessed to know why we are not fighting. Must we fight before government moves? No. If there is need to fight, then we fight. But if there is no need to fight, then there is no need to raise dust or create a scene."

Obi Orders Contractors Back To Sites

GOVERNOR Peter Obi has ordered contractors handling road projects in Anambra State to resume work, especially as the rainy season gradually comes to an end.

Obi said this while inspecting the Umudioka axis of the Nkpor-Amawbia Road accompanied by the Managing Director of the contracting firm handling the project.

He said although the Federal Government is responsible for the road, his administration embarked on the project because of its strategic importance and need to enhance movement and boost socio-economic activities in the state and environs.

Speaking at the overhead bridge at New Parts Junction Nkpor, Governor Obi said work on the bridge would be completed by December this year. He explained that vehicular movement would further be enhanced with ongoing reconstruction of the Nkpor-Amawbia Old Road by the state government.

The governor, who expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done so far, said the state government is trying to partner with the Federal Government to fast track completion of the project.

Council Gets N64m Waiver On 10-year Debt

From John Akubo, Dutse

THE Jigawa State Commissioner for Finance, Budget and Planning, Alhaji Nasiru Umar Roni, has disclosed that the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has granted a waiver of N64m on N114m accumulated bank loan collected by the Hadejia local government council from commercial banks between 2001-2006.

The commissioner, who made the disclosure during a press briefing on the outcome of the negotiation with the corporation, said the waiver was granted after series of meetings with committees set up by the state government to seek a soft landing between the local government and AMCON.

According to him, the council had in 2001 taken a N25m loan from Unity Bank and in 2006 taken another loan from Union Bank Plc, amounting to N7.4m.

He noted that the loans and cumulative interest rose to over N114m in 10 years and that the liability was not properly transferred to the succeeding administration.

Roni said that five monthly repayments of N5, 333. 332m were made on the first loan in 2002.

"Due to this financial logjam, the council had no extra money to execute any developmental project for its people after paying salaries, because AMCON applied for the deduction of the loan out of the council's federal allocation direct from the office of the accountant general of the federation as stipulated by law."

"Considering the fact that the incumbent government is serious on financial management, AMCON agreed to the waiver, while the 26 local government councils of the state agreed to give out soft loans from the stabilisation fund to Hadejia council to enable it settle the debt once and for all."

He explained that the debt is a carryover of the financial mismanagement perpetrated by the immediate past state government.

The commissioner disclosed that the money has already been paid and the council has been bailed out from the prolonged financial hiccup, which prevented it from making progress.
