Why The Programme
The proposed programme is planned to draw the attention of the international community to the existing agricultural capability in Nigeria and many other African countries, using Kwara State as a case study, which before recently, was under-utilised leading to the much internationally published poverty and food insecurity in many African countries.
It is, therefore, cheering to note that some state governments in Nigeria and many African countries are changing the trend by encouraging commercial farming and assisting the youths to engage in mechanised agriculture.
On the other hand, European and Asian markets for agro inputs such as tractors and expertise are saturated, thus requiring a fast developing market like the West African. Africa and, indeed, Nigeria possess the land and human capital to feed the world; Europe, Asia, North and South America have the technical know-how to create a synergy with the African capability for wonderful intercontinental economic growth and food security; hence, this programme. The programme is not an academic talk-show. It is aimed to create the synergy between Nigerian farmers, the sponsor-banks, government agencies, agro-institutions and the foreign agro-input manufacturers for partnership that will last the test of needs and time.
Why in Ilorin
It is a practical exercise. Over 75 percent of the landmass of Kwara State has been dedicated to industrial food production. Besides, the State Government has created wonderful investment windows in the area of agriculture and food production, waiting to be fully utilised by the international community.
