The screening exercise organised by former Super Falcons striker, Mercy Akide-Udoh, tagged "Play- 2Learn", began yesterday at Campos Square, Lagos with the former African Footballer of the Year expressing delight at the talent on display.
"I have always known we have talent in this country and I was not disappointed," Akide-Udoh said, minutes after the first day of trials.
"I am excited by what I have seen on this first day, and by tomorrow (today), I hope to see even more people coming in to register and participate," she added. Assisted by ex-Falcons Ann Cheijine and Okunwa Igunbor, Akide-Udoh took participants in technical drills and a short mentoring lecture before they played a full game.
National Mirror learnt that a total of 10 scholarships would be won by the trialists. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, Seyi Akinwumi, has expressed pleasure at the players turn put at the two-day exercise.
"The programme tallies with our Eko Football vision of developing football from the bottom up and the LAFA is encouraged to support this initiative," Akinwumi said.
Organiser and football journalist, Colin Udoh, said the successful candidates would be named after Day 2 of the trial today.
