The Chairman, Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Lagos Chapter, Mr. Ayo Adediran, has urged town planning practitioners to reposition themselves in order to promote the practice of the profession.
Adediran said this at a memorial service in honour of the pioneer chairman of the chapter, the late Mr. Joseph Awogbemi.
He said it was important for town planners to work harder to make human settlements orderly and sustainable.
Speaking on the achievement of Awogbemi, Adediran said the late town planner was passionate about the profession and was an icon of urban and regional planning.
The chairman said, "Today's occasion presents a moment for reflection not only on the contribution of Pa Awogbemi to the profession and practice of urban and regional planning, but also to search ourselves.
"What are people going to say when similar events like this are organised in our live time? What have we been doing to promote the profession and the practice? Who do people think town planners are today? What are we doing to achieve best practices in planning? Papa has done his bit."
The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Toyin Ayinde, who represented Governor Babatunde Fashola, said Awogbemi should be emulated as his whole life seemed anchored on the profession of urban and regional planning.
