IG-Abubakar• Arrest three suspects

PLANS to assassinate the Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Mr. Tha'anda Jasson Rubainu, have been uncovered by the Police Command, the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Sule, has said.

Sule told journalists in his office Thursday that the three culprits saddled with the responsibility of assassinating Rubainu have been arrested and detained. According to him, they have been making useful revelations to the Command and would soon be charged to the court.

The Commissioner disclosed that the assassination plan was leaked to a police constable by one Deborah Amos, and he hinted the commissioner. He said: "Actually, a policeman named Luke Godswill went to see the deputy governor but he was denied access and was handed over to me.

"I forced him to tell me why, as a policeman, he wanted to see the deputy governor and he told me that he wanted to give him information."

And that information was that "his girlfriend told him that there was a plan by another boyfriend of hers by name Benjamin Mailafiya, to kill the deputy governor and that a ransom of N3 million would be paid to whoever assisted them to carry out the act."

The three prime suspects - Mailafiya, Constable Godswill and Deborah Amos - as made known by commissioner, would soon be arraigned before the court for offences ranging from conspiracy to attempted murder.

He also disclosed that a suspect behind the gruesome murder of the late Minority Leader of the Gombe House of Assembly, Alhaji Abdulhamid Waziri, has been arrested. Waziri was killed by unknown gunmen in January this year.

According to the commissioner, "two brothers committed the act and we have arrested one suspect but the other, who is the prime suspect, is on the run."

Meanwhile, Sule said that over 56 persons have been arrested following the resurgence of the restive Kalare members, who terrorise the people with various weapons ranging from cutlasses, daggers, den guns and knives, and a lot of them have confessed to have participated in the murders that had taken place in the state.

Also, the Taraba State Police Command said it has killed two notorious armed bandits terrorising the people of Donga Local Council of the state. The bandits, according to the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joseph Kwaji, were killed during an exchange of gunfire with the police at Mararraba-Tati Village in Donga Council.
