Constitution review: Mark urges senators to drop personal interest
Apr 26th 2013, 23:15

The Senate President, David Mark, has urged members of the Senate Committee on the Review of the Constitution to avoid pursuing personal interestin the conduct of their assignment.

Mark gave the charge while declaring open a three-day working retreat for members of the committee in Lagos on Friday.

He urged members to rise above personal interest and give Nigerians a constitution they would be proud of.

Mark said, "Let me also remind members of this committee that whatever you come up with at the end of this retreat is still going to be subjected to debate on the floor of the Senate.

"We can collate the aggregate views of Nigerians. As I stand before you today, that view has not changed. My position has not changed. Every senator who is here today has an open mind and if it is the wish of Nigerians that we follow a particular direction, that is what we are going to work on.

"At the end of the day, it is the majority view that will be carried forward to the floor of the Senate. And since it is only the senators that will participate, I expect that it will be a very robust and vibrant retreat."

According to him, senators must use the mandate given to them with a lot of caution.
