National Sports Commission has decided to popularise  beach volleyball in the country.

The NSC  Assistant Director of Elite Athletes Development,Mr. Emmanuel  Igbinosa, said during the week the commission had discovered that Nigeria had the potential to win medals in the sport at major competitions.

He said  beach volleyball would be included in the events for the 19th National Sports Festival  in Calabar, Cross River in 2014.

"We discovered that it is an area that Nigeria can do well as we are doing in beach football," Igbinosa told the News Agency of Nigeria.

"Our athletes have  been doing well locally, nationally and internationally and this will be an encouragement for them to do more."

Nigeria placed fifth in the men's event and eight in the women's version at the   10th All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique in 2011.

"So, the athletes  should be given support because we want them to do better than they have done," the NSC chief said.
