NIGERIANS have been urged to imbibe the exemplary leadership lifestyle of the foremost nationalist and first President of Nigeria, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, if the country is to achieve it desired expectations.
The call was made at the weekend in Lagos as traditional leaders, dignitaries and stakeholders from diverse walks of life gathered to mark this year's Zik's Day, which was organised by Nnamdi Azikiwe Day Initiative with the theme, "Azikiwe and the Unifying Question."
Addressing participants, the chairman of the event, Chief Debe Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who is the first son of former Biafran leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the selflessness and persistent attitudes the late premier of the eastern region inculcated in producing qualitative leadership for his followers.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu described Azikiwe as a true nationalist who loved Nigeria with everything he had. He noted that the landmark achievements of Azikiwe would endure to tell future generations the efforts he made at developing his people.
According to a former Presidential Adviser of National Assembly Matters, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa, represented by Patrick Doyle, the influence of Azikiwe on her life got her to where she is at present.
Ita-Giwa noted the fairness of Azikiwe towards the feminine gender, saying her mother rose to become the Eastern Editor of one of the newspapers founded by the late statesman. She added that exposure she had through her mother's leadership role in Azikiwe's newspapers contributed immensely to her active involvement in politics.
