The National Chairman, New Nigeria People's Party, Mr Gilbert Agbo, has commended the Federal Government for suspending the proposed N5,000 notes and conversion of other denominations into coin.
Agbo told newsmen in Abuja on Monday that the suspension was a welcome development.
He said that Nigerians had not been enlightened by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on the economic benefits of the restructuring of the nation’s currency.
“Our system does not create room for adequate information on government policies. The problem is that those who need to do their job are not doing it properly to educate Nigerians on very important issues such as the restructuring of currency.
“The Corporate Affairs Department of the Central Bank of Nigeria should have enlightened Nigerians on the benefits of introducing the N5,000 notes,'' he said.
According to him, if Nigerians are properly educated on the new note in all the Nigerian languages, the projects will not have been greeted with stiff opposition.
“The CBN is legally authorised to introduce the N 5,000 note but it should have considered the sensitivity of Nigerians so that there will be no negative reactions.
“For the apex bank to have announced its intention to introduce the N5,000, it knows the benefits to the nation’s economy in the long run.'' (NAN)
