A Karu Upper Area Court on Monday sentenced 22-year-old Emeka Christopher of Aso, Mararaba, Nasarawa State, to one month imprisonment for assaulting a police officer.
The Presiding Judge, Umar Kagarko, however, gave him an option to N5,000 fine.
Kagarko said the offence was a serious one as law enforcement agents risk their lives for the citizens and should not be molested.
He said he only tempered justice with mercy considering the fact that the convict was a student.
Police prosecutor Tangshak Jerry had told the court that ASP Abu William attached to the Nyanya Police Station reported the case on Sept.14.
“While Abu was controlling traffic on Nyanya road, he saw Emeka with his goods displayed on the road.
“Abu asked Emeka to remove the goods, but Emeka slapped Abu on his chest," he said.
Emeka pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed the court to temper justice with mercy. (NAN)
