Warawa – Alhaji Abdullahi Sanusi, the District Head of Warawa in Kano state, has called on the Federal and Kano state governments to assist the victims of flood disaster in the area.
The flood, which occurred on Wednesday night, ravaged five villages in Warawa Local Government Area.
Sanusi made the call when the officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the state Emergency Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (SERARA) visited him in Warawa on Friday.
He said the call was necessary in view of the magnitude of the disaster and to cushion the effects of their sufferings.
”For the past 12 years we have not witnessed similar incident in this local government area.
”There is an urgent need for both the Federal and the state governments to come to the aid of the victims.”
Earlier, Alhaji Abubakar Jibirin, the Executive Secretary of SERARA, said that more than 12,000 people were displaced by the flood because the Kano River overflowed its banks.
He said five villages had been submerged by the flood, pointing out that only one girl lost her life in the disaster.
Jibrin gave assurance that the state government would soon provide relief materials to the victims.
He said that so far, 19 persons had lost their lives in the flood which affected 30 Local Government Areas of the state from August to date.
NAN reports that officials of NEMA, SERERA and Red Cross were in the local government to assess the extent of damade caused to the villages as a result of the floods. (NAN)
