The National Universities Commission has stepped up its monitoring of universities in order to stop the running of illegal and unapproved programmes.
The commission has also stated that it has increased its post-matriculation visits to universities as a way of verifying programmes on offer to check abuse in the system.
Executive Secretary, NUC, Prof. Julius Okojie who said this in an interview on Friday in Abuja, explained that credible leadership was necessary to end the corruption in the university system.
Okojie insisted that tertiary institutions intending to run new courses must pass the NUC resource verification.
He said, "NUC is concerned about the corruption in the university system and that is why we are collaborating with ICPC to investigate the abuse and corruption in the system.
"In the 18th century when the university was an isolated community, it was corruption-free but the appointment of politicians into the governing council brought corruption into the system. So, I appeal to the government to appoint only credible people into university governing councils because credible leadership is very important."
