Spokesman dumps Rivers ACN

THE crisis rocking the Action Congress of Nigeria in Rivers State worsened on Monday when the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Jerry Needam, announced his resignation from the party.

Needam's resignation from the ACN came a week after the leader of the party in the state and its governorship candidate in the 2011 election, Dr. Abiye Sekibo, took a similar decision to dump the opposition party.

Giving reasons for his action, Needam said his resignation from the ACN was based on principle and a protest against an attempt to use the Acting Chairman of the party, Mr. Esuku Esuku, to desecrate the standard of the ACN.

He said, "My resignation from the ACN is hinged on principle. I want to place on record that there is an attempt to use Esuku M. Esuku, to desecrate the principles on which the Party was conceivably based through the infiltration of the very people, whose political philosophy is diametrically opposed to that of the ACN."

The former spokesman for the party, however, said the people of the state would not forgive him if he had used the ACN platform to seek monetary gains and political advancement from the state governor.

Reacting to Needam's resignation, Esuku said the party would meet on Tuesday (today) to deliberate on the development, saying the state ACN had reasons to reject Needam's resignation.
