Mrs. Blessing Odafe had earlier pleaded with the Agege Customary Court to dissolve her union with Mr. Victor Odafe, but Odafe was not ready to divorce his wife.

When the couple appeared again in court, Blessing sought more time for her husband to follow her to the village to perform the proper marriage rights.

She said, "If he must marry me, he has to marry my family. And since he says he is not interested in divorcing me yet, we should do the right thing."

The court, however, told her that the request would be granted if her husband was ready to embrace the plan, but Odafe rejected the idea.

The court president, Mr. Emmanuel Sokunle, asked Odafe why he said no when he was still interested in reconciling with his wife.

He said, "Since our last case, I have been talking to her and her family and because of the conspicuous nature of villages, I don't like going there.

"Also, I'm not a village person. Her father stays in Jos. When we did our traditional marriage, we did it in Jos where her father stays. Even then, I was worried because I know that a typical Igbo traditional marriage is meant to be done in the woman's village and not elsewhere.

"Nonetheless, I took my entire family from Delta to Jos to do our traditional marriage.

"Her father wanted me to go to the village to formally introduce myself to other family members. I want to go to her village but I want to go in a reconciliatory mood not when the matter is still in court. I have told her to withdraw the case from court."

Blessing, however, insisted that her husband must visit her people in the village so that their union would be blessed and that had been the wish of her father.

Odafe, on the other hand, feels that he married Blessing and not her family members or village.

He says he is scared of going to her village because he doesn't know why, all of a sudden, everyone is insisting he should come to the village when there is already the involvement of court in the issue.

The court later advised Odafe to get himself a job to take care of his family and see his wife's family as his.

The case was adjourned for two months to give room for reconciliation and to afford the couple the opportunity to visit the village.
