Group develops online, TV documentary on power sector

A civil society group, Project Light Up Nigeria, has developed an online and television documentary on Nigeria's power sector.

The group, which organised the first annual Light Up Awards last year, said the move was part of its commitment to seeing Nigeria achieve steady electricity power supply and well lit up streets at night.

The documentary is titled, 'Electricity power situation in Nigeria: The true story'.

The National Coordinator, Project Light Up Nigeria, Mr. Frank Aja Ukpabi, who spoke on the project said the 45-minute documentary analysed Nigeria's electricity power situation with different views from different people, while celebrating those contributing towards steady electricity power supply and well lit up streets.

This, he noted, was a confirmation of the results of the Light Up Awards organised by the group late last year.

He said the documentary, which will soon be on foreign and local television stations, various social media networks, and on the group's website, was in consonance with the sole objective of the group, to recognise, appreciate and encourage those contributing to a Nigeria of steady power supply.

According to him, it is expected that the encouragement would lead to more achievements.

Ukpabi said the documentary would serve as a wake-up call for those lagging behind in executing electricity power projects in the public and private sectors, and also function as an informative tool for Nigerians at home, in the Diaspora and the international community.

He also said the group was working on lighting up some communities across the country, which were off grid.

Power supply has been a major challenge for Nigeria and with trillions of naira spent, experts say there is still a long way to go.

On Wednesday, the Federal Government had admitted that despite the various efforts being put into stabilising the power sector about 120 million Nigerians were still in darkness.

The Minister of State for Power, Mrs. Zaynab Kuchi, had disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.

She said, "We have 160 million Nigerians now and we are only giving power to 40 million of that population. What it means is that there are about 120 million Nigerians that are without power and wish to buy power."

Kuchi explained that for the entire 160 million Nigerians to enjoy stable electricity supply, Nigeria must look in the direction of Independent Power Projects.
