The President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, on Friday called on telecommunication companies to compensate their subscribers for non-delivery of Short Messaging Services during the Yuletide.
Ogunbanjo made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos. He lamented that some text messages sent during the Christmas and New Year celebrations were not delivered while some were delivered days after the Yuletide.
He said that even when the text messages were not delivered, telecoms subscribers were charged for the service. According to him, the intention of the subscribers has been defeated, as the messages are meant to put smiles on the faces of recipients.
“Quality of service has been the bane of the telecoms industry. Imagine you send a New Year message to someone and it is taking four days to deliver, some are even not delivered and you are charged.
“The Nigerian Communications Commission should mandate the operators to give each subscriber 100 free SMS as compensation,” Ogunbanjo said.
He said that telecom subscribers were not particular about reduced tariffs in 2013, but preferred good quality service from telecoms service providers. Ogunbanjo said that in line with the recent attacks on base stations and offices of the operators, telecoms consumers were not expecting lower tariff.
“The attacks on telecoms infrastructure and their offices is a sad one for the telecoms industry. It is one industry that Nigeria is so proud of.
“We should not allow these suicide bombers to erode the growth of the industry and the economy,” Ogunbanjo said.
