Nigeria to check influx of illegal aliens
Jan 6th 2013, 20:24

TOWARDS ensuring a more secure Nigeria, the Federal Government has said it would not adhere strictly to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Protocol on Free Movement, but would rather monitor the influx of aliens into the country.

Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, disclosed this in Abuja at the weekend at a press briefing on recruitment and movement of members of staff of the ministry and agencies under it.

While expressing optimism that the country's 2013 security strategy would be a shift from last year's, Moro disclosed that already, 16,000 illegal immigrants profiled by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) had been repatriated.

"Nigeria is part of the protocol on ECOWAS free movement but it will not stop us from taking measures against illegal immigrants, who are contributing to the spate of violence in the country," he said.

"There is more work to be done, the NIS which controls our borders, has been directed to procure appropriate technology and beef up security at regular and irregular borders to contain the situation."

The protocol read in part: "The mobility within the ECOWAS area is an essential component of the regional construction, which is itself a condition for a proper insertion of the West African economy in this age of globalisation. The ECOWAS member-states thus agreed to eliminate among them all the obstacles to the free movement of people and of goods.

"Free movement of people consists in enabling the nationals of ECOWAS member-states to move freely in all the territories of member-states (and thus to exempt them from holding visitor's visa and residence permits)."

It will also "allow them to reside in a member-state other than their country of origin and eventually to establish in one country and exercise an employment there or undertake commercial and industrial activities."
