NPA retirees cry out over pension
Oct 2nd 2013, 23:11, by Emeka Ugwuanyi

Retired Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) staff, 2006/2007, batch, have cried out the President Goodluck Jonathan to compel the management of (NPA) to absorb them into the monthly pension scheme as earlier directed by the Federal Government.

The chairman of the group, Charles Ayo Binitie, told reporters in Lagos yesterday that of all the NPA staff affected by the public service reforms, only the 2006/2007 set was not returned to the defined benefit scheme, saying the group has written the Presidency and the Minister of Transport on the issue.

Binitie said: "All those who retired from April 2005 to March 2006 as well as those who retired after 2007 were returned to monthly pension. Additionally, all those who are still in the service of NPA today are assured of their monthly pension.

"No Godly reason had been given why we were denied our pension. On August 3, 2009, the office of the Director-General Budget of the Federation released a circular titled "Enrolment of Severed Staff into the Defined Benefits Pension Scheme." Based on this circular, the leadership of this group had written several letters to all organs of government that made up presidential task force.

"The Minister of Transport had written several letters from February 2010 to July 11, 2012 on this subject matter requesting the managing director of NPA for comments. Until this moment, none of these letters had been replied by the NPA because no justifiable reason had been brought forward, while we are yet to be placed on monthly pension.

"It is also pertinent to mention that we have been on this matter since 2007 and NPA management has always downplayed our demands by either refusing to comply or respond to letters from the Federal Ministry of Transport."
