As Nigeria celebrates 52 years as a sovereign nation, some religious leaders in Imo State think the country could have done better with the huge human and material resources available to it.
In his message, the Anglican Bishop of Okigwe South Diocese, Rt. Rev. David Onuoha, lamented that the hopes and aspirations for a better life have consistently remained elusive.
"Despite the abundant human and material resources with which this nation is endowed, it is obvious that the hopes and aspirations for a better life and a stronger nation have consistently remained elusive", Bishop Onuoha said.
While saying that all political office holders at inception, not only identify but also vow to fight corruption that has held the country hostage, Bishop Onuoha however expressed worry that "experience has shown that the situation worsen with every succeeding administration".
It was the considered opinion of the Anglican cleric that Nigerian leaders should be more sincere, honest, committed and forthright in tackling corruption, which has remained a national cancer.
Delivering a homily during a Pontifical Sung Mass in Saint Mulumba Catholic Parish, Owerri, Rev. Fr. Justin Okoro blamed Nigeria's woes on corruption, bad advice and insensitivity of public office holders to the plight of the citizenry.
"Most politicians do not believe in any ideology. This is why they shuttle and roll from one party to the party of the man in power. Nigerians should beware of such politicians because they have nothing to offer", Fr. Okoro pleaded.
