Issue warrant for…not 'to'
Oct 23rd 2013, 23:10, by EBERE WABARA

DAILY SUN of October 16 welcomes us today: "The Lord's Chosen Charismatic Revival Ministries presents 2 day (2-day) holy ghost inspired (ghost-inspired) programme…." (Full-page advertisement) "Cross-section (A cross-section) of children praying during…." "…the frantic effort being made to cover the fraud and warned INEC not to cover such crime (such a crime)."

"November 1 take over (takeover) date faces threat" Still on DAILY SUN: "…it is sad that despite oil discovery and oil booms experienced at one time or the order (sic)…."

Politics today: one time or another "Power of patriotism: The Ethiopia (Ethiopian) example" "Arrest warrants issued to (for) trio" "…on the ground (grounds) that this honourable court lacks jurisdiction to make the order." I am not rising yet! "…respondents concealed materials (material) facts to this honourable court thereby deceived this court into making the interim orders." (Source: as above)

"After reading the 24 paragraphs (24-paragraph) affidavit in support of the motion ex-parte deposed to…." A 'learned' high court judge, a gentleman with 20 years' post-service experience, signed the document where the three preceding errors were extracted from! From GTBank (sic) comes the next wrongdoing: "Enjoy round the clock banking!"

And this: "Set-up (set up) standing instructions" (Full-page advertisement, THISDAY, October 12) At your service: round-the-clock banking THE SATURDAY NEWSPAPER also fumbled in its editorial set-up (noun this time): "As agric bank hands-out (hands out) N20bn in 10yrs (10 years)

"The Fulani then started stealing the cattles belonging to the Takad people." 'Cattle' is uncountable! This should be for the kindergarten class! "I…was always involved in one activities (activity) or the other (another)." "Many Nigerian football fans breathe (breathed) a sigh of relief as…." "The footballer turned singer shares his story in this chat with…."Showbiz flair: footballerturned- singer

"When kids celebrates (how?) the nation's cultures" Still on THISDAY under review: "Only in her 20s, Mimano has treaded (trod) where angels feared (fear) to." "During her recent trip to Nigeria, this enterpreneur (entrepreneur) opened up to…." "…their strengths and revealing their potentials." Destiny catalyst: 'potential' is non-count.

"Also in the archives are pictures of all the colonial Governor Generals…."

This way: Governors- General "UNDP Sokoto coordinator killed by unknown assailants" How can a reporter or his medium know assailants or gunmen? So, leave out that bit! THE PUNCH Front Page and Editorial of October 11 take the baton from DAILY SUN: "Boy, nine, becomes Nigeria's youngest Microsoft certified professional"

'The most widely read newspaper': Microsoft-certified professional "We question the continued relevance of the non-performing Federal Roads Maintenance Agency which has failed woefully (abysmally) to justify its existence since it was created 11 years ago."

From MULTICHOICE Nigeria comes this anniversary slip: "10 couples will win an all-expense paid trip to…." Ideas: an all-expenses- paid trip National Mirror of October 10 consisted of many slip-ups: "… the Middle region, comprising of present day (present-day) Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa and Kwara states." Delete 'of '! "Resident doctors' strike unnecessary, says FG…action continues, says (sic) doctors" Is there no other word or form of attribution except 'say'?

"Few (A few) months ago…." "Aba has immense potentials (potential) for industrialization…." Next is NATIONAL MIRROR Editorial: "But the way the country's economy and politics are being handled make (makes) the citizens disbelieve the government." "Diplomat calls for varsities, companies collaboration" Get it right: companies' collaboration "We promise good result, Keshi assures" Who did he assure?

"New league season kicks-off (kicks off) Nov 22" "…but making it happen through effective implementation is key with regards (regard) to access to affordability to all." "FinaTrust mfb customers experience raises hope for enterpreneurs"

Brands & Marketing: customers' experience and entrepreneurs "Jonathan kicks off strike prevention (strike-prevention) programme" THE NATION ON SUNDAY of October 6 indulged in language demolition: "Crash: Identification of victims' relatives begin (begins)" This is a common error of attraction—not yet proximity! "Jonathan commissions (inaugurates) Geregu plant"

I am scandalized that this medium is still committing this solecism despite countless corrections here! "False prophecies bane of Nigeria's problems—Akpabio" 'Bane of problems'?

Impossible! A rewrite: False prophecies bane of Nigeria" "Sir, in this precious moment of your Birthday (sic) anniversary…." 'Birthday' and 'anniversary' cannot co-function.

"Top shots eulogise Obey at concert…recount artiste's heydays (heyday)" Still on THE NATION ON SUNDAY: "…why churches need administrators and sundry issue (issues)" "APGA candidate flags off (launches) campaign tomorrow" "He said APGA could not afford to loose (lose) the election…."
