Police in Ondo State said they were on the trail of a former police officer, Tajudeen Adeniyi, who attempted to kill his 36-year-old wife by inflicting on her several machete cuts.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Wole Ogodo, disclosed this to journalists yesterday. Adeniyi was said to have fled after the attack on his wife of ten years.
Speaking with journalists on her ordeal, Adeniyi's wife, Moyosola, said her husband had abandon the matrimonial home about eight months ago with three of their four children only for him to resurface on Wednesday night.
The woman disclosed that she was on bed when Adeniyi forced his way into her room about 11pm by breaking the door to her apartment located at Plaza area of Akure.
Moyosola explained that her husband came with about two men who prevented her from running away from the room as Adeniyi descended on her immediately he broke the door, using broken bottles, cutlass and club on her.
She said Adeniyi and the two men took to their heels immediately neighbours came out to intervene, adding that her husband also stabbed a neighbour who attempted to rescue her. Mrs. Adeniyi added that she managed to escape after running a few meters away from the house with the help of a motorcyclist who took her to her sister's house in the town.
Dr. Matthew Adeyeri, who treated the victim, said she had about 12 centimetres cut on her head, adding that the woman was lucky to have survived the attack.
Adeyeri said if the cut inflicted on the woman's neck had been as deep as the one on her head, she would have died before getting medical help. Meanwhile, the PPRO said efforts would be made to arrest Adeniyi, adding that Moyosore was responding to treatment.
