Ekiti State Government said it had commenced massive recruitment of teachers into its schools.

Commissioner for Science and Education, Mr. Kehinde Ojo, in an interview with journalists in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Monday said the state government would recruit 1,600 teachers into its secondary schools to boost teaching.

The commissioner said Governor Kayode Fayemi gave the go-ahead for the recruitment about three weeks ago, adding that there were 1,600 "consequential vacancies" at various schools across the state.

He said 80 local government workers, out of over 442, recently, redeployed in schools, had been screened and certified as capable to teach.

According to him, only applicants with qualification in education will be considered for employment as teachers.

The commissioner said the state government was not planning to sack any teacher because of the ongoing strike embarked upon by the teachers to demand the implementation of 27.5 per cent teachers' allowance.

He explained that the state government was already discussing with teachers on how to resolve the crisis, saying the state government was ready to pay 15 per cent professional allowance which would cost it N90m.
